On Day 1, general surgeon Shelby Blank testified about Daniel Markel's condition after he arrived at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

She described him as extremely critical, with two penetrating injuries as well as swelling, bruising, and bleeding. Her testimony addressed resuscitation measures and stated that he was pronounced deceased about 12 to 14 hours after admission, shortly after midnight on July 19.

Blank also identified State's Exhibit 23 as a photograph depicting Markel on arrival at the hospital. Neither defense presented cross-examination.
