Sara Newhouse, a Tallahassee Police Department victim advocate in 2014, testified that she was present for most of Wendi Adelson's law-enforcement interview. She heard the portion in which Wendi called Donna Adelson and testified that Defense 71 accurately reflected her memory of that call.
Newhouse described Donna as sounding shocked and said the reaction appeared to be the first time Donna learned that Dan Markel had been shot. After the parties agreed to redact two comments identified by the State, the court admitted the recording.
On cross-examination, prosecutors tested the limits of Newhouse's interpretation of the reaction. She acknowledged that she had never met Donna and did not know her usual demeanor, and she did not recall hearing weeping or wailing during the call. The court later sustained a hearsay objection to a question about an alleged statement by Wendi after the call, struck the question, and instructed jurors to disregard it.
