Tara Kawass represented Katherine Magbanua in the 2019 joint trial and returned as defense co-counsel for Magbanua’s 2022 retrial. She framed the defense around whether Magbanua knew of the alleged killing plan and argued that communications, financial records, payroll payments, and other evidence supported explanations different from the State’s theory. Her examinations tested witnesses’ memory, firsthand knowledge, prior statements, incentives, and the foundations for business records and recorded communications. Testimony in Donna Adelson’s later trial referred back to Kawass’s earlier role, identifying her as Magbanua’s lawyer when Magbanua was arrested in 2016.
